Yes. Steel panels and stone coated steel resist the bruising and granule loss that ages asphalt shingles after a hailstorm, and many products carry a published impact rating from their manufacturer. Cosmetic dents are possible in severe hail, but the roof keeps shedding water. We inspect storm damage before recommending repair or replacement.
Not on a house. A residential metal roof is installed over decking with underlayment, and often over an existing roof or a batten system, so rain sounds much like it does under shingles. The noise people remember comes from bare metal barn panels fastened straight to open framing with nothing underneath.
